- PHILIP GOODWIN (1881-1935) PRINT "IN
PHILIP GOODWIN (1881-1935) PRINT "IN THE CANOE"Featured in this lot is this framed, Philip R. Goodwin (1881-1935) print titled, "In The Canoe" circa 1905-1910. Philip Russell Goodwin's natural born talent for illustration became evident very early on and by age eleven he had already sold works to Collier's magazine. Goodwin studied under Howard Pyle at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia from 1899-1900. He agreed to his master's belief that an artist should spend time in the environment which he is illustrating. Goodwin also studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Students League in New York. Goodwin's illustrations were published in magazines such as Harper's Monthly and Harper's Weekly, Scribner's and celebrated books such as "Call of the Wild" by Jack London and "African Game Trails" by Theodore Roosevelt. The print shows two men in a canoe, drifting down a river as a mountain lion bears its teeth towards the men in the canoe. There is a deer bounding through the shallow river away from the mountain lion and men. One man is wearing a red shirt, while the other wears a hat and a blue shirt. The print is set in a gold gilt frame and sits behind glass. The print shows fair to good condition showing tears on the right side and creases on the top right corner but no other signs of damage are noted. The visible art measures 14 3/8" L x 21 7/8" W, while the entire piece measures 16" L x 23 1/2" W. The piece weighs approx. 3 lbs 8 oz.
